Introduction

Welcome to the ‘Equality & Diversity in Healthcare’ online training course.

This course will give health & social care workers an overview of the relevant legislation governing equality and diversity within the healthcare sector. It will also lay the groundwork for understanding the inequalities people face in healthcare and how healthcare professionals can tackle this.

By learning the ways in which individuals may experience discrimination and adversity, you can make positive steps to ensure you are always working in a fair and non-discriminatory way.

The course will also cover what to do if you believe you are being discriminated against or bullied at work, and the process of ‘blowing the whistle’ if you suspect a patient is being mistreated or violations have been made at your workplace that are in the public interest.

Once you have completed this course, you will be able to:

  • Define the key terms ‘Equality,’ ‘Diversity,’ ‘Inclusion,’ and ‘Human Rights’
  • Understand crucial equality legislation including The Human Rights Act, The Equality Act, and The Public Sector Equality Duty
  • List the nine ‘protected characteristics’
  • Understand your right to be free from bullying and harassment while at work
  • Be aware of common inequalities in the health sector
  • Understand how to promote equality in the workplace
  • Know the benefits of diversity in healthcare
  • Know how to raise a concern at work
  • Understand the concept of ‘whistleblowing’ and your protections under whistleblowing policies.
